Maximum cut thickness depends directly on laser power and assist gas purity. With a 12kW fiber source, mild steel can be cut up to 40mm. Scaling up to 20kW or 30kW allows processing of steel plates up to 60mm and above. For manufacturing, consistent and clean edge cuts are achieved up to 30mm using a 12kW–15kW configuration, and up to 50mm utilizing a 20kW+ laser source.
Oxygen is primarily used for carbon steel processing, initiating an exothermic reaction that melts the material, requiring lower laser power but creating an oxide layer. Nitrogen acts as an inert shield gas, preventing oxidation, and is ideal for stainless steel and aluminum to achieve bright, ready-to-weld surfaces. High-pressure air is a cost-effective alternative for medium thicknesses, utilizing a nitrogen-oxygen mix to reduce gas costs while maintaining cutting speeds.
